Summer is here — and with it comes sunshine, outdoor adventures, and yes, the inevitable bumps, burns, and bug bites that come with the season. As a parent, knowing what to watch for (and where to go when something goes wrong) can make all the difference.
The Summer Hazards Every Parent Should Know
Summer is peak season for childhood injuries. Between longer days outside, water activities, and the heat itself, little bodies face a unique set of challenges from June through August. Here’s a rundown of the most common issues we see at Pro-Health Urgent Care — and what you should do about them.
Heat Exhaustion & Heat Stroke
When kids are running around in the heat, their bodies can struggle to cool down fast enough. Heat exhaustion is the warning sign: heavy sweating, pale or clammy skin, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, and a fast or weak pulse. The fix? Get them out of the heat immediately, offer cool water, and apply a cool, damp cloth to their skin.
If symptoms escalate to heat stroke — confusion, hot and dry skin, a rapid strong pulse, or loss of consciousness — this is a medical emergency. Call 911 or head to the ER right away.
When in doubt, bring them in to see us. We can assess hydration levels, provide IV fluids if needed, and make sure your child is safe before you head home.
Sunburn
A bad sunburn can turn a fun weekend into a miserable week — and repeated sunburns in childhood significantly increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. For mild sunburns, cool baths, aloe vera, and ibuprofen for the pain usually do the trick.
But some sunburns need professional attention:
- Blistering over a large area of the body
- Sunburn accompanied by fever, chills, or headache
- Significant pain that isn’t relieved by over-the-counter remedies
- Sunburn on a child under 1 year old
We’re here for those moments — no appointment needed.
Cuts, Scrapes & Wound Care
Summer means scraped knees, cut feet from the pool deck, and the occasional deeper laceration from a fall off a bike or scooter. Most minor scrapes can be handled at home with soap, water, and a bandage. But visit us if:
- The cut is deep, has jagged edges, or won’t stop bleeding after 10–15 minutes of pressure
- The wound is on the face and you’re concerned about scarring
- There’s debris (gravel, glass) you can’t remove
- The area becomes red, warm, or swollen in the days after — signs of infection
- Your child’s tetanus vaccination isn’t up to date
Sprains & Strains
Twisted ankles from running through sprinklers, wrist sprains from catching a fall — these are summertime staples. For mild sprains, the classic RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) helps reduce swelling.
Come see us if your child can’t put weight on the injured limb, there’s significant swelling or bruising, or the pain doesn’t improve within a day or two. We can do on-site X-rays to rule out a fracture and get your child on the right treatment plan.
Insect Bites, Stings & Allergic Reactions
Most bug bites are just annoying. But bee stings and certain bites can trigger allergic reactions that range from mild (localized swelling and hives) to severe (anaphylaxis). Signs of a serious allergic reaction include:
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
- Rapid heartbeat or dizziness
- Widespread hives beyond the sting site
If your child has any of these symptoms, call 911 immediately. For milder reactions — or to rule out Lyme disease after a tick bite — we’re here to help.
Swimmer’s Ear
Swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) is one of the most common summertime complaints in kids. It happens when water gets trapped in the ear canal, creating the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. Symptoms include ear pain that worsens when you tug on the earlobe, itching, and a sensation of fullness in the ear. It’s very treatable with prescription ear drops — just pop in and we’ll take a look.
